Poinsettias Are Perfect For Last Minute Perfection

Christmas is just DAYS away and if your house isn’t beaming with Christmas brilliance, it’s time to get in gear! Christmas poinsettias can instantly turn any space into a festive favorite. Their big, star-shaped blooms bring back many memories of Christmases past. It’s no wonder they’ve become a staple in our holiday celebrations.

Just check out this (above) beautiful Christmas poinsettia with it’s massive red blooms. Just imagine one of these beauties decorating your dining room. Choose mini poinsettias for a fantastic Christmas centerpiece. It takes only one to spark the Christmas spirit in all of your holiday visitors, but why not get one for every room in your house!? No matter where your guests wander, Christmas follows! Poinsettias are easy, last-minute Christmas decorations for those less-frequented rooms, and much less expensive than buying an entire Christmas tree with decorations.

If you have a much larger area to decorate, bunch several poinsettia plants together, or ask your local florist to create a unique poinsettia topiary. The giant topiaries above are from the beautiful Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Christmas poinsettias look fantastic together; just look at how striking the red and white mix is together!

If your Christmas decorations are not the traditional Christmas colors, no worries! Poinsettias come in a wide range of vivid colors. The above is a unique, vintage pink color and would look fantastic with any pink or vintage Christmas decor. Contact your local florist for the best selection of poinsettia flowers. They will have many types you won’t see in department stores, and they’ll be alive and healthy! (I don’t know about you, but every time I see poinsettias in department stores they just look awful! The blooms are falling off and they’re about half-dead. Not sure what type of spirit those will put you in, but it’s definitely not Christmas!)

If your holiday plans don’t include guests at your house, poinsettias still make great Christmas hostess gifts. Stop by your local flower shop on your way to grandmas, or where ever it is you’re headed, and pick up a luscious Christmas poinsettia. (To ensure you find the quantity you are looking for, call your florist ahead of time, just to be safe! This close to Christmas, you can’t be too careful!)

Celebrating the Holidays At FSN

It’s no secret, Christmas is our favorite holiday here at Flower Shop Network. We can hardly wait to take down our Thanksgiving decor and trade it in for Christmas trees and holiday lights. It could be because we are spoiled with a delicious, catered lunch, or the dozens of presents (mostly ridiculously silly, gag gifts, but those are the best, hah!) under the 5 trees! So, here’s a little tour of what we’ve got going on this year:

Innovative Florist Working To Make Flowers A Staple In Her Community

Flowers On Main in Placerville CA has been doing some wild and crazy things in their shop! Twice a month they invite their community into the shop for a hands-on flower workshop. Each guest has the rare opportunity to (with helpful guidance) build their own floral design to take home and enjoy.

Flower Classes: Vegetable Centerpiece Judie, the owner of Flowers On Main, says the classes are an absolute hit in her community. The program has been running for about 3 years now and she has seen guests of all ages and from all walks of life. Many are regulars and attend every single class.

Each class normally has a theme of either a season or holiday. For Thanksgiving, they do centerpieces; at Christmas, wreaths. Spring gets spring flowers and for Easter, they do Easter basket arrangements. Halloween is the best — they actually bring in pumpkins to use as their flower arrangement container.

Judie says, “I teach them the techniques that [florists] use. It’s not rocket science, and it’s certainly not secret. Martha Stewart has given out all of our tricks over the years. I’m not teaching anything they couldn’t learn elsewhere, it’s just giving them the opportunity to do it.”

The classes are around $25-$35 per person depending on the arrangement. Judie admits, “I don’t make a lot of money from it up front, but all of these women become customers, and all of their husbands buy flowers for them.” It’s her way of getting her flower shop’s name out into the community. It’s “not so much about promoting myself; it’s about promoting flowers. Promoting flowers in the house — to everyone. The more they have flowers around them, the more they’re going to want flowers around them.

Flower Classes: DIY Arrangments Flower classes at Flowers on Main instill a deep love of flowers, as well as a special respect for them. Judie teaches her students the details of how to take care of the flowers and how to make an arrangement last longer. She shows them the right way, and students are “often surprised by what it takes to make a nice arrangement, and are always impressed at how long they can last.”

For one special class, she pitted her flowers against those from large, chain stores. She asked each of her students to bring in a mixed bouquet they bought at the grocery store. She supplied the vase and a few extra flowers and showed her students how to make it look right. The results? “They’ve all learned that grocery store flowers don’t last!”

Judie says she loves the teaching aspect of it all. At the beginning of the year, the group gets together and collectively decides what they want to learn that year. She says, “I’ve never trained anyone who wanted to work at a flower shop — but I have a couple of them that could do that! It’s fun and we have a great time doing it. When it becomes not fun, then I won’t do it.”

Judie also does a similar workshop with the girl scouts a few times a year. The girls learn how to arrange a bouquet, then take the flowers to convalescent homes.

Judie’s main goal is to promote the awareness of flowers in her community. She says, “I wish the United States was like Europe; anytime you go to dinner, you bring flowers.” She wants flowers to be a bigger part of our every day lives, and in my opinion, she’s well on her way!

So, if your in California, then check out the flower classes at Flowers On Main in Placerville.

Holiday Celebrations Ideas From The Past: The Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice Decorations When we think December holidays, our minds instantly think Christmas. Did you know the oldest and most widely celebrated holiday by different cultures is actually the winter solstice. The winter solstice is celebrated on almost every continent and by almost every culture throughout history. This year the winter solstice is the longest night of the year.

The winter solstice occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is farthest away from the sun at its maximum of 23°. Meaning “the Sun standing still,” the solstice marks the very first day of winter and is the longest night of the year. To ancient peoples, solstice celebrations were important because they encouraged the sun to return to spring.  No one knows when people started celebrating this event, but we do know it was celebrated in early Mesopotamia with a 12-day festival to their god, Marduk — over 4,000 years ago! Our ancestors certainly put forth an enormous effort to celebrate the winter solstice; just think of Stone Henge! (A perfect marker to the sun at both solstices.)

Recently (and by that I mean in the last 1,600 years, hah!) Christmas has overshadowed the ancient holiday. (Although many Christmas traditions stem from solstice celebrations: yule log, mistletoe, Santa and others.) With our modern lives we’ve lost much of our connection to seasonal events that were so important to our ancestors. This year, take some time to celebrate the winter solstice — throw a unique holiday party… a winter solstice party!

Whether you’re having a huge shindig, or just a family gathering, you cannot celebrate the solstice without fresh foliage. Fresh flowers and green foliage remind us that winter will fade and life will begin to grow again! Traditional winter solstice plants include: oak, mistletoe, evergreens, holly and ivy. Also wheat and harvest-time plants and veggies remind us of how precious our sun is to us. (Great way to recycle Thanksgiving decorations!)

Winter Solstice Event Decor

Another key feature in winter solstice decor is circles. The circle represents the cycle of the seasons, as well as the sun, which makes all life is possible. This can be a great theme throughout your solstice party decorating. Contact your local florist and ask for winter solstice decorations to match your solstice style.

Give Flowers This Christmas — They Always Fit!

Have someone on your list who’s just impossible to buy for? Either they have EVERYTHING or are so PICKY it’s a hopeless mission finding anything they would like. Well here’s a little help…

Surprising With Christmas Flowers

Send Christmas Flowers From Your Local FloristThis year, don’t stress yourself over finding the perfect gift for them, send Christmas flowers. Nothing lifts the spirits like a beautiful bouquet of fresh blooms, which is exactly what we need in the later part of December. Add an element of surprise by sending flowers to your picky recipient’s office. (Especially great if the person you have in mind is a boss or co-worker!) They will be thrilled to be the envy of everyone at the water cooler.  Sending flowers to one’s work doesn’t always have to be done by the hubby or boyfriend, but it IS ALWAYS a great surprise!

Perfect Gift With The Holiday Hostess In Mind

If your recipient is as fast paced as you are during the holidays, give them a gift certificate from your local florist. This is an especially great gift for someone who hosts a lot of parties, or simply loves to decorate their home. They can use the certificate just before their big New Years party for a stunning, winter centerpiece.

Send Flowers All Year Long

If your picky someone-special’s gift budget is bigger than a bouquet of Christmas flowers, ask your florist about their year round flowers club. Many local florists have a special year round flowers program. This would be quite a special gift! (I know I’d love it!) Each month, your giftee will receive a new bouquet of fresh flowers (matching the appropriate season or holiday) to decorate their home. Who wouldn’t LOVE that?

So the next time you’re stressing over what to buy rich Aunt Sally or your picky big sister Karen for Christmas, think flowers — they ALWAYS fit.

How To Take Care Of Potted Rosemary

Ask the Expert: How to maintain a Rosemary plant.
I received a Rosemary plant, shaped and the size of a small Christmas tree. It was placed outdoors and the weather here has been in the low 20’s at night. It is on the front porch and receives sun during the day, but I am afraid it will freeze. How can I preserve it against the elements.Would it survive inside. MY house is kept very warm and has some very sunny rooms. Margaret

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply: Rosmary is a hardy plant outdoors through USDA Hardiness zone 7, when planted in the ground.   Potted however extreme cold – lower than 20 degrees F, especially with wind chills may harm your plant.

Rosemary is a fairly easy plant to maintain  indoors.  First thing – If it is wrapped in foil or celophane, that needs to be removed soon, as these can trap water in the pot.  It can stay on through the holidays, but be careful not to overwater the plant.

If repotting the rosemary, terra cotta would be my choice of pottery.  It prefers bright light, and a well drained soil,  and preferably not in direct path of heating vent.   Keep the plant moist  but not oversaturated with water and fertilize regularly with a balanced water soluable fertilizer such as Peters or Miracle-Gro.

It may take a few weeks to get the watering situated as it will depend on how warm you keep your home,  the best way is to try to water once a week and adjust if needed.  Don’t be affriad to trim off sprigs for  roasted turkey or chicken.  Once spring arrives place plant outdoors in full sun or part shade.

Spice Up Your Holiday Vases With This Technique

If you’re looking for a little something extra to spice up your holiday flower arrangements, try this cinnamon vase technique!

Cinnamon Flower Arrangement

Not only will this arrangement spark Christmas spirit, it will smell wonderfully for weeks to come! Cinnamon is a favorite in holiday smells, and will definitely set the mood for any holiday party. This little design would make a perfect hostess gift for the elf in charge of your favorite Christmas get-together.

For this technique, you will need:

  • a small, plastic cylinder container under 8″
  • a bunch of 8″ cinnamon sticks
  • hot glue
  • scissors
  • ribbon

Cinnamon + Vase = Creativity!

First, hot glue the individual cinnamon sticks vertically to the outside surface of your vase. (tip: cut the tops of the cinnamon sticks different heights to give it a staggered, rustic look)

Tie ribbon around the center of your cinnamon vase to finish the look. Depending on your design, you could use ribbon, rafia, wire — it’s really up to you. If you want to go a step further, add a bunch of holly, mini candy cane, mini pine cones, or anything festive, to the front of your design.

Don’t stop at just cinnamon! Think of other ways to use this technique. You could use branches from your yard. (Birch wood is very popular this time of year.) How about the large candy cane sticks? Instead of a vase, use this as a great candle treatment. It’s all about using your imagination!

This is a great technique for florists to use in their shops. However, if you’re a craftster like me, try this at home! Just don’t forget to visit your local florist for a great winter flowers to use in you’re new and aromatic vase!
